4 tips for picking the right seating for your living room

From family movie night to catching up with friends over coffee, your living room is just as important as the kitchen when it comes to entertaining. The sofa is the centerpiece of most living rooms and a great centerpiece can upscale your home interior instantly.

With so many sofa styles and sofa designs available, picking the right seating for your living room can be a daunting task. This is more so when you shop with Black & Walnut online or in-store as the infinite options when it comes to styles, shapes, configurations and customisation alternatives can be overwhelming. Follow our simple tips below to find the right living room seating for your space so you can enjoy it for years to come.

1. Scale to room size

A good sofa should fit nicely into your living space without throwing off the proportions of your furniture and interior design.

If you have a tight living space, you may want to size down to a loveseat sofa and pair it with a small accent chair or ottoman.

If your living room is generously-sized, you will need to decide exactly how much of the space you want your couch to fill. If you entertain often, you may want to leave room for a bar counter or wine cellar.

Having a hard time visualizing the size of the piece in your space? Try marking off the corners of the sofa on your floor with tapes. This allows you to visualize the overall scale and check that you leave enough space for walkways.

2. Decide on the sofa orientation

If binge-watching k-dramas is your thing, you will need to choose a sofa that fits in the space oriented towards your built-in TV cabinet. Bear in mind to leave sufficient allowance for the optimal TV viewing distance.

3. Choose the seating configuration

No matter the size of your living room, your seating layout needs to work for your lifestyle.

If you like to kick up your feet while netflixing, consider a L-shape sofa like our MACKINNON L-Sectional Sofa.

MACKINNON L-Sectional Sofa

A Chaise L-shape sofa is a subset of modular or sectional sofas. Modular sofas are made up of a series of movable sections called modules. These modules come in a range of styles, like arm or chaise pieces, that allow you to configure various seating arrangements that best meet your needs. Chaise L-shape sofa is the most common type in this category.

Chaise L-shape sofas are perfect for 3-4 people to lounge. They are usually made up of a 2-seater or 3-seater and a chaise.  The L-shape sofa works well when placed at the centre of the room as a feature piece or against a wall to cover awkward, tiny gaps.

If you host large parties often, a modular corner sofa or a U-shape / C-shape Sectional sofa would be a good bet, pair off with an accent chair or two at the side for more intimate conversations.

Modular sofas not only make a great feature piece for an open-plan living space but also create a seamless divide between dining and living areas. Whether you need to accommodate a growing family, or just fancy a new seating layout, our modular sofas can be easily downsized, upsized or re-arranged.

4. Match the sofa style

Nail down on your interior design theme and pick a sofa style that complements it. A Scandinavian sofa style, characterised by neutral tones and clean silhouette works well for a minimalist interior design theme. On the extreme end, a French Cabriole or a Camelback looks insanely awkward in an industrial themed room.
